Emergency First Aid for Babies and Children

Child and baby safety is paramount in everyone's mind, especially parents, but accidents can and do sometimes happen. When an accident happens, sometimes you may have just seconds to act in order to save a life, and that is not the time to be panicking, or trying to learn how to perform life-saving techniques.

This course is aimed at parents, grandparents, relatives, family friends, baby-sitters, community groups, or those encountering children in their work environment where they may not have covered children's techniques on a Work/Ofsted course, and may be useful as an additional module in these cases.

The course will give confidence and practice in the emergency life-saving techniques that are required in those first few minutes before professional help arrives.

Course contents

The course covers treatment for

  • unresponsive, non-breathing babies and children (CPR)
  • unresponsive, breathing babies and children (Recovery position)
  • choking babies and children
  • serious and minor cuts/bleeding
  • shock (blood volume loss)
  • other injuries/conditions that learners have concerns about as time permits

Course duration

3 hours tuition time, typically over 1/2 a day.

Please note that the contents of this course are not sufficient to demonstrate competency under the Ofsted Early Years statutory framework for registered child carers. It may be useful as a means of maintaining competency and refreshing/updating skills for those so registered however in between tri-annual requalification.

Certification

Certificates will be issued following successful completion of this course by the Learners. Assessment of the learners skills will be by continuous assessment by the trainer. Where a learner is unable to demonstrate competency (for example, someone unable to kneel on the floor to carry out CPR), a certificate of attendance may be issued.

Certificates are valid for 3 years.
